Animal Ear Lab

1. We wanted to figure out if big ears would help you hear further away. So we ran two test one with our normal, ears and the other with enhanced ears. It has been known that larger ears help you hear things further away. Animals that have big ears can hear better than animals with small ears, therefore they can hear another animal coming up on them.

2. The group went outside and we did our testing to see how far we could hear a pin click. We did one with just are regular ears then one with some bigger ears. Most people went further with the enhanced ears. There were a few down fall during this experiment.

4. Did the addition of the larger ear make a difference in the distance at which you were able to hear the pen click? Explain. Yes the enhanced ears made a difference, but your environment that you're plays a big role in how this lab works. The direction on the wind along with the sound of the wind is a major factor. Your surroundings will also effect the way hear.

6. It has small ears to keep the heat from leaving the body.

They  don't have the capacity to hear far away

Ecotower Observation #3 4/8/2011

1. Animals:
-Worms: We burried three worms in the soil in our ecotower so we don't know if they are alive or not.
-Snails: The snails we had died.
-Crickets: All of our crickets are dead.
-Beta Fish: The fish we had is still living.

2.We think that the algae is keeping the fish alive. The animals died at the top died from not enough of oxygen. The worms are still unknown because we can't see them The snails died in the water.

3. Plants:
-Beans Plant: It grew but is starting to die.
-Algae: It's turning a brown color.
-Other Plants: They are beginning to die.

4. The plants are starting to die because they aren't getting anough carbon dioxide. The algae is turning brown from lack of oxygen

5. The water is getting yellower. It has particles floating around it. The algae is sinking.

6.

7. I dont't think the fish will die until the algae dies completely

EcoTower Observation #1 3/25/11

 1. Animals:
-Worms: The three worms that we put in our ecotower are buried in the soil so we don't know if they are or dead or alive.
-Crickets: We placed six crickets in at first. During the next day we only spotted four and when we sealed all of them had died.
-Beta Fish: We only put in one beta fish and it is still alive.
-Snails: Two snails were placed in our ecotower and they are still living.

2. We think that the fish and snails are alive because they are able to survive off the algae and the oxygen from the water. The crickets and worms are dead because, we believe, the carbon cycle failed. We were unable to see the worms to observe if they were dead or alive.

3. Plants:
-Bean plants: The three bean plants we planted sprouted up in a week.
-Algae: Our algae plants were alive before we sealed our ecotower and are still alive.
-Other plants: We put two other plants in our land area only one survived the other died.

4. We think the bean seeds grew because they were able to grow roots in the soil. The soiled stayed well moist to bring the seeds alive. One of the plants that were giving to us by Mr. Jennings, grew successfully. The other plants died because the roots were unable to grow into the soil. The algae is still alive because it is in the water, providing it with moisture and oxygen.

5. When we sealed our ecotower the water was clear but now after a week it has turned a yellowish tint when you look at it.

6. I didn't expect our fish to survive this long. I thought it would die within a week.
7. On the last day I think our fish will be dead but our plants that are alive and still growing. The water is going to be all dirty looking.

Ecotower sealing day

Why did we do this project?  -We did this to show how all three cycles work at one time in an ecosystem and to show how plants and animals survive in certain conditions with biotic ands abiotic factors.

Group members were:
 -T.J
 -Emily
 -Travis

Each member were assign to bring in supplies
 -T.J: Gravel and plastic bottle
-Emily: Tape, worms, crickets, fish, strainer, bottle, grass, and snails
-Travis: Soil, caulk and caulk gun
 -Mr. Jennings: Plants
 -Mrs.Richardson: Algae

The three cycles that were included:
 -Nitrogen
 -Carbon
 -Water

Plants:
-Air plant
 -Algae
 -Grass

Animals:
-Fish
 -Snails
 -Crickets

I followed directions and did not sneak a peak at my ecotower.

Signs of Spring

The 1st sign of spring was found along the edge of the practice field. We saw female cones hanging at the end of the tree branches, honey suckle vines that were just starting to grow and pine trees that stood out to everyone. While listening I heard the a/c from the school running, leaves blowing and tumbling over one another causing a weird sound. I felt warmth of the outdoors that felt amazing, the sun beaming down and baking me, and a very light breeze from the wind.
When the 2nd sign of spring was found we were down by the pond. We spotted  the female and male cones with pollen on it, little waves in the pond from the wind. A bird cawing in the sky and a falling branch was heard. I felt the wind picking up causing it to cool down but it still felt nice with the 54 degree weather.

Sign 3 was seen on the trail behind the school. We seen a butterfly flying all around and sum red branches that I have never seen before. I heard the sound of frogs that were about to mate (courtships), the few dry leaves cracking on the ground, sticks being broken from people stepping on them. I felt the sun shining down on making it hard for me 2 bare and a light breeze that kept the temperature from being perfect.

In front of the school is where sign 4 was seen. I saw the trees in front of the school were starting to bloom, and few patches of grass starting to get greener. We heard the sound of branches braking off trees, cars moving up and down the road, and an annoying bug buzzing in my ear. I felt it starting to get hot again because the sun beaming down on me with no shade around.

Day 3

On February 3, 2011 we went down by the bus garage for site 1 and we heard the leaves scraping across the asphalt and the wind blowing the trees together. The water flowing out the concrete pipe, the big trees, and the big yellow buses all caught our eyes. The difference of the temperature was felt upon upon us along with blowing on us. At site 2 we all heard each other talking to one another and the birds cawing in the sky. The woods were seen, also a tree with a hole in it from a wood pecker, and tree with an unknown substance on it was spotted. I too felt a tree hit me in my hand. We heard the leaves being stepped on. I seen fungus on a log, a mashed down brier patch and a wood pecker hole in a tree. I felt a brier sticking me in the leg and the wind hitting me in the face all at site 3. During site 4 leaves crunching, people being loud, and birds cawing were heard. I seen the sun shining through the trees, the trees blowing from the wind, and a eating acorn from a squirrel. I felt the wind blowing making me cold.

Day 1

Are class went outside January 12, 2011. A group of four all join together collecting information. Info was collected on what we heard, saw, and felt. At site 1 we heard the wind, leaves rattling in the woods, cars going along the roads and the trains in the back ground. We also saw birds flying in the air, tall grass along the side of the woods, a lot of mud from the previous melted snow, and rocking trees from the wind. The cold air was felt upon are skin, the wind blowing in are face, and the frigate temperatures making it hard for us to focus. Site 2 we heard the bird squawking in the air, the whistle coming from the wind blowing. The group spotted then fallen leaves that laid upon the ground and a feather that sat on top of melting snow. We felt the cold air that made us shiver. During site 3 the wind was heard and the leaves crinkling across the ground. We saw all types of nature trails, a stump with moss on it, a deer rub against a tree. As we moved along we felt the wind blowing and the winter temperature bringing cold weather.
